Learning is *NOT* Repetition

July 01, 2005

We had a presentation from a Marketing Director of whatever from Giant Corporation X. At one point durring his presentation he was talking about how the plan to reach customers was to educate them about the products. But he kept saying 'Learning is Repetition. Learning is Repetition. Learning is Repetition.' I disagree. Learning is NOT repetition. Memorization is. If you really want someone to learn something then what you need to do is figure out a way to communicate the information to the person in a way that they can relate to. Whether its because of their previous experiences or because it reaches them on an emotional level, once your information is wrapped in a way that makes sense in relation to something they already understand real learning can take place.

Reminds me of something that a smart person once said: "Practice doesn't make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect."
