Schools of Thoughts 3

March 12, 2007

I just got back from Schools of Thoughts 3, a design education conference held at Art Center College of Design. Doug Kisor and I presented our paper on the need for flexibility within a design program to address change by discussing what we are currently doing in the department and participated on the dicsussion panel that followed.

Monome Step Generative Drawing

January 26, 2007

Monome Step : Generative Drawing on Vimeo

This is my first test of having the Monome control some generative drawing along with the audio through this step sequencer I made in Flash similar to the original 64Steps.

I especially like where the step sequencing begins to break down because of how deep the drawing gets.

Its the same drawing engine I used to generate this seasons Thank You cards (although for the Monome version I removed the Type Flakes)

formalfunction

December 29, 2006

During our recent trip to the Netherlands I broke the UV filter for my camera. It was our last full day there and it happened at the StedlijkMuseum. It fell off and chipped a little piece out of the edge. So, I decided to make a formalfunction project from it.

Same Code, Different Frame

October 02, 2006

I am working on this project and I had to go through hours* of video within Flash (FLVs dropped onto FLA timelines) and drop function calls along the timeline in order to trigger events based on the audio. I had already watched all the clips to find the key frame numbers (which wasn't that bad because some of the clips are hilarious) but after I had all the frame numbers, I needed to go through and drop 2 lines of code at each frame... the same 2 lines... on each frame... a tedium that I did not look forward to. So I ended up writing this panel to help do it faster and with less 'boring' than the 'by hand' way.

With this Script Sprinkler panel, you can enter a frame number and some Action Script. The panel will then make a keyframe at the frame number entered, on the currently active layer and add the Action Script entered. I found it to be really helpful for marking these videos that where thousands of frames long.

*Ok, so it wasn't really hours of video but it felt like it when I marked the first 2 by hand. It was probably more like 10 minutes of footage.

MkShft Light Table

July 29, 2006

I made this light table for use in burning screens with more accuracy. It is made from a flippped over Lego table with a large window pain resting on the now inverted four legs of the table. The table had the center removed to originally house a hanging bag for block storage. This proved to be a great way to inset the light so that as I was testing out a new brand of emulsion I could adjust the distance from the light to the screen.

Spam Paper

July 10, 2006

We decided to take a shredder full of junk mail from countless credit card companies and home repair services and make some new paper out of it.
